John the Baptist said we must repent; that is, turn away from a life of sin, and live in obedience to God. The Sadducees were a group of wealthy, powerful, and elite temple priests, who only followed the law in the books of Moses. The Pharisees were an influential group of ordinary priests and laymen, who taught and followed the law in the books of Moses, other books, and oral tradition. John attacks both groups because their obedience to the law was overshadowed by their sinful desires for wealth, power, and honor.
Lord, help me to turn away from my sinful desires and live in obedience to you.
