The people were receiving conflicting teachings from the religious leaders of the time. The Pharisees followed the Torah, other books of the old testament, and strict observance of the traditions of the elders. They also believed in the resurrection. The Sadducees followed only the Torah and did not believe in the resurrection. There were other leaders too; temple priests, high priests appointed by Rome, and the religious judicial system found in larger towns known as the Sanhedrin. As Jesus went around teaching the people, he had compassion for them because they were hungry for the true gospel message, but were being led astray.
Lord, help me to pray for an increase in vocations to religious life in your church.
