Matthew 15:1-20, The Tradition of the Elders

The phrase ‘tradition of the elders’ refers to the rules and teachings of the religious leaders. The traditions were intended to help the people follow God’s commandments, but the leaders enforced the traditions as if they were God’s law. These traditions were a burden on the people, and as Jesus pointed out, some of them actually contradicted God’s commandments. Today, we have traditions that enhance our family and holiday celebrations. And we have religious traditions that help us connect to God.

Lord, help me to focus on you and your commandments, aided by our traditions.
