The book of Exodus commands Jews to sacrifice and eat a lamb, in remembrance of their liberation from slavery. At this Passover meal, Jesus establishes a new covenant. He will sacrifice his own body for us to eat, in remembrance of our liberation from sin. But how are we to eat his body? It’s a divine mystery that is hard for humans to understand. But we have faith in the words of Jesus and we trust in the power of the Holy Spirit, who transforms bread and wine into his body and blood.
Lord, help me to remember your words and your sacrifice when I receive Holy Communion.
