The Sanhedrin was the supreme court for the entire Jewish nation. However, living under Roman rule, they were not able to put Jesus to death. So the chief priests and the elders sent Jesus to the Roman governor who was able to execute him. But neither the Sanhedrin nor Pilate truly had authority over Jesus. God chose to redeem the world through the death of his Son. Therefore, God allowed the Sanhedrin to send Jesus to Pilate.
